[Possible bug] Calibration during dispcal measurements

Hi Graeme,

I'm using Argyll CMS v.1.6.3 on Windows XP SP3 x86 platform to calibrate display on a
notebook using i1 Pro 2 instrument.

During calibration process (iteration 4) dispcal asked me to re-calibrate instrument.
Here is dispcal message:

Patch 73 of 96
Sample read failed because instruments need calibration
Place the instrument on its reflective white reference Serial No. XXXXXXX,
and then hit any key to continue,
or hit Esc or Q to abort:

So I placed i1 on the reference and performed the calibration and it was performed OK with
"Calibration complete" message. After that I was needed to place i1 to the monitor again.
I expected a pause after the calibration so I'd have a time to do it. But dispcal
restarted the measurement process again immediately after the calibration (the test
windows was flashing by red and green colors) and some measurements were done while
re-positioning. So worst case Delta E in this reading was ~315.

Is this behavior is normal, or may be better to pause dispcal until correct re-positioning
of the instrument on the screen?

Recently I used i1 Pro 1 (old) version and dispcal did not insist on re-calibration.

Ilya Dedinsky

Hmm. There are a couple of bugs here. One is that (currentl) Argyll shouldn't
ask for instrument calibration during display calibration or profiling.
The other (as you note) is that it doesn't give you a chance to position
the instrument back on the display afterwards.

This will be fixed in the next release. Let me know if you need a fix sooner than
that.

Hmm. There are a couple of bugs here. One is that (currentl) Argyll shouldn't
ask for instrument calibration during display calibration or profiling. Can confirm the bug in dispread. I've tried to read the display of the Android device by 1.6.3 dispread in web server mode. Instrument EyeOne Pro. Dispread executable was loaded from site. I've tried my own MinGW compilled 1.6.2 dispread - the same result - it asks a calibration in the middle of display reading process.
The other (as you note) is that it doesn't give you a chance to position
the instrument back on the display afterwards. Confirming too for dispread. While display instrument calibraton was asked and the calibration performed the patches continued the changing before I press any key or moved the instrument onto the display.
Dispread 1.6.2 by MinGW the same behaviour.

Hi Graeme,

Here's the command line I used to profile when the bug occurred:

dispcal -v -H -yc -qh -gs -t6500 -e1 -o "_%name% 6500K sRGB (A) %date%"

When I changed profile quality to -qm (default), the calibration processed
smoothly without this issue. So I found a workaround and can patiently wait
for the new release. :)

I consider Argyll to be the best calibration software I used (X-Rite/Gretag
i1 Profiler, PM, Monaco, ... many in-RIP calibrators). The precision and control
are excellent, CLI is flexible and easy to reproduce / invoke from scripts.
Thank you!
